The counties of Devon and Cornwall provide some of the most attractive coastal scenery anywhere within the British Isles and a plethora of small boat operators exist to enable visitors to witness and enjoy their wide variety of landscapes from the water. The vessels operated vary from those of the latest fibre-glass construction to pre-war clinker-built boats of noble heritage. In addition to the purely excursion boats which operate on a seasonal basis, Devon and Cornwall also boast an interesting selection of ferries which are a vital part of the region’s infrastructure across the series of deep flooded valleys that dissect its southern coast. If this fascinating array of ferries and excursion boats is not enough, beyond Land’s End we come to the Isles of Scilly which rely on their maritime connections as a vital lifeline with the rest of Britain. Here too, small ships are operated from St Mary’s to the other islands and out into the Atlantic to the famous Bishop Rock lighthouse.
